First Annual Crum Creek Snapshot Held May 2007

As an exciting outdoor extension of their science curriculum, last May 2007 300 9th grade students from Marple Newtown High School participated in the First Annual Crum Creek Snapshot at one of four locations in Newtown or Marple Townships. The sites were: Boot Road just below the covered Bartram's Bridge , Mill Hollow, Hildacy Farm, located below the Springton Reservoir, and the Trout Run tributary at Crum Creek Rd. The Crum Creek Snapshot is the result of a partnership formed between Marple Newtown High School, the USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station, and CRC. The effort was spearheaded by d MNHS science teachers Robert Speca, Robert Sidlowe, and Liz Marino, and CRC Board member Jane Fava ( a BVA Watershed Watch Instructor). One purpose of holding an annual snapshot of Crum Creek is to assess the state of various parts of the watershed over time, which will hopefully lead to greater awareness and protection measures as the watershed continues to be built out. Integrating the field study of Crum Creek into the regular earth sciences curriculum is also a great way to increase understanding of concepts being taught in the classroom, and to meet state standards for watershed education.
The students recorded and analyzed differences in the stream's chemical water quality, biological life, and physical conditions. The results are listed in the attached report . The study will also serve as a baseline for future studies. CRC and MNHS would like to thank the US Forest Service in Newtown Square for funding the purchase of the tests kits used by the students, and for initiating the Partnership with the high school. CRC and MNHS would like to thank the volunteers who assisted as biology or chemistry "coaches" for the event, including Kathy Bergman , Robyn Wood , Connie Shapiro, Craig Marleton ( CRC, Aqua), Kristin Civitella ( CRC/ Gannett Fleming), Marie Hodnett, and Bill Brainerd (CRC). CRC and the MNHS would also like to thank the Wardens for granting use of their Mill Hollow property as one of the sites.

Second Phase of Little Crum Creek Project Completed

Working in partnership with the Ridley Park Borough and the Borough's Shade Tree Commission, and under a grant from Boeing Corporation, CRC completed another phase of the Little Crum Creek restoration in East Lake Park along Hillside Avenue. 65 volunteers, including many borough residents as well as employees from Starbucks Media , Starbucks Lawrence Park, and Swarthmore College Rotoract helped plant trees, live stakes of dogwood and willow, and spread seed. The next steps will be some maintenance and watering over the summer, and some more planting in the fall.CRC is also looking into obtaining another grant for stabilizing a severely eroding potion of the channel upstream.
