Crum Creek Watershed

Impaired Reaches

33% of Crum Creek streams (24 out of 72 miles) have been assessed as impaired waters and not attaining even the most modest designation of Warm Water Fishery. This degraded area includes all of the Lower Watershed, of CrumCreek and Little Crum Creek, plus the Trout Run sub basin.

The Clean Water Act requires that remediation plans be developed by EPA and PA DEP  for all streams not attaining their designated uses.

TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) is a scientific determination of the sources of and assimilation capacity for specific pollutants causing the stream’s impairment.  The outcome of the TMDL study is a required reduction in these pollutants allocated to point sources (such as industry and municipal and private wastewater treatment plants).  The remaining required reduction will be allocated to nonpoint sources, such as loadings from stormwater runoff discharged through municipal storm sewers systems.  This new regulation may require municipalities to pass ordinances to reduce the amount of excessive stormwater entering streams.

Whereas the TMDL Plans are currently being developed for Chester Creek, the TMDLs for Crum Creek are not presently scheduled until 2017.  To check on the status of TMDLs for nearby streams such as the Wissahickon and Brandywine, see EPA TMDL.
